Southeast Indiana Health Education Network

Southeast Indiana Health Education NetworkIn 2008, the Decatur County Community Foundation became one of 10 counties in Southeastern Indiana to receive grant funding for a program called Economic Opportunties 2015 (Eco15)to help develop a strong workforce for future needs in our region. One of the areas of focus that hasn't been talked about as frequently is the Healthcare initiative. Some great technology has been purchased for the region to help improve our Heatlh education system.

Approximately 30 simulation mannequins have been received at locations in the Southeast Indiana Health Education Network. They are part of the EcO15 Healthcare initiative and will be used to educate and train students and healthcare personnel in high school and college courses as well as clinical settings.

The types of mannequins were determined through an analysis of needs assessment conducted several months ago and cover applications currently needed by educational institutions and hospitals. Types of mannequins include: skill trainer; low, medium, and high fidelity, and wireless. The degree of fidelity of a mannequin is related to the realism of patient care that a student or healthcare professional would experience.

Simulation scenarios provide the added advantage of allowing a student or healthcare professional opportunities to practice a procedure, review audio-visual tape of the experience in an interactive debriefing session.

Based on estimates provided in the needs assessment conducted, there will be 1,300 students and 1,400 healthcare professionals trained in the next year using this new and advanced technology.

Contact the Decatur County Eco15 Coordinator Miranda Maxwell for more information about this other Eco15 initatives at 812-222-2520 or mmaxwell@edcgdc.com.
